Like most things I make this all started with a project for my kids. This mini wallet is probably intermediate sewing project. If your not comfortable sewing in a zipper this might be a bit of a challenge. But if you don't try you never know...
First cut out your material. Here is what you will need to cut out:
1- 11x5 inches of main material, round corners of one end.
1- 11x5 inches of inside material, round corners of one end, use the main material as a pattern.
1- 11x5 inches of stiff interfacing (not shown in picture)
1- 5x5 inches of main material or inside material. this is used for the pocket and will not really be seen.
Other materials and tools used: obviously your basic sewing tools(scissors, thread, sewing machine) stiff iron on interfacing, snap or Velcro and a tool to apply snap ( I used a Dritz snap fastener pliers and size 16 pearl snaps), and a zipper.
Iron on your interfacing to main material.
Next you will sew on your zipper. Pin the outside material and the 5x5 inch pocket piece on to the zipper with the zipper facing toward your big piece. If you have a right and wrong side to your material make sure that 5x5 pocket piece is facing with right side out like in my picture.
Now sew on the inside or lining to the zipper the zipper should face towards the right side of your material.
Lay out your piece and iron the zipper, next I like to stitch up the sides of the zipper so that the zipper has been double stitched this is a optional step. If you have chosen to use velcro you will need to stitch on the bottom piece here, place it on the main material under the zipper.
Its difficult to see but on that 5x5 inch pocket you might want to pin it like I have shown in this first picture to the outside material, this will help you later. Now line up you wallet, pin it. Do not forget to open up your zipper!!! Also a tip to make sure that pocket is pinned down so when you sew it up there is no wrinkle.
Sew it up. Make small snips in your curves so when it is turned it lays flatter. Trim your edges as well. Then open up the zipper the rest of the way and turn your wallet. You can see in this second picture where my pin is still in, where I have marked the end of my 5x5 inch pocket. Push out your curves real well. Iron it.
This is where that pin that marked my end of my pocket comes in handy. Fold your wallet where that pin is adjust the fold to make the wallet the height you will want it in the end. Adjust the fold so that you are not going below that pin. Sew across like shown in the picture and test out your zipper pocket.
Now fold the wallet again right on that stitch you just made for the zipper pocket. Now sew up the sides from the bottom up to the zipper.
Here are the supplies I used to put in the snap. This Ditz tool is very easy to use and comes with good instructions. I have gotten the tool before where you hammer the snap on and it never comes out looking very good. Although you can always use Velcro. For Velcro you will need to stitch on the top part of Velcro to the lining.
Start with the top part of the wallet, find the middle and make a small mark. Put on the snap following the instructions that came with your tool.
Fold over your snap and press down firm this will leave an indention of where the snap on the pocket will go. Follow the instructions that come this the tool to fasten the snap. You may have to fold over the pocket like shown in the picture to get to where the snap goes.
Now you have the snap put on, the wallet should fold over and snap perfectly.
And your done!!! Enjoy making your own and remember I have these wallets for sale in my Etsy shop!
